Can I change the backlight settings on my laptop?

Im just about to snuggle up in bed with a good movie but my DVD player is broke and ive gotta use my laptop so im connecting it to my tv and I dont fancy every 20 or so minutes having to get up and move the cursor so my laptop doesn't go to sleep is there anyway I can stop it or prolong it?
