What must I do before I start up a fireplace?

We just started renting a house that has a fireplace. It's coated with soot and seems a bit dirty. I've never messed with a fireplace so besides cleaning it out, what other steps must I take before I can safely start it up? (It's straight firewood-run, no gas line to it).
